American finds his own way of success
Author:   Article source: Shenzhen daily  Hits:992  Add time:2009-5-28
AMERICAN Carl Joseph deMarco has gradually found his own way of success in language consulting by loyally and honestly providing quality services to clients since his company established in 2007.

The company, Shenzhen Master Consulting/Master Education Group located in Shekou, primarily works on English and Chinese consulting and translation and occasionally French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. “If you use the English version of QQ2009, you’ve seen our work,” said deMarco, 44, from Washington, D.C.

Apart from that, deMarco’s favorite work is communication consulting. This includes working with clients about writing, making presentations and meetings. He said this kind of interaction is very engaging and rewarding for both him and clients.

DeMarco said he thinks that Shenzhen is a very ripe market for any kind of language-based consulting or training. That’s why he chose a niche market by providing a friendly and intimate sort of service that giant companies aren’t able to offer.

Because the business went through big difficulties in its early stage in financing, it wouldn’t have survived without help from customers and deMarco’s former students and friends.

“Many of my clients have recommended us to others because of our services, which helped the company with a sustainable development. You have to appreciate customers like them. Some even become friends you would do anything in the world for,” said deMarco.

For appreciation and promotion, deMarco has given free English lessons and translation services, even though he’s doing it during his free time.

“But it’s a rewarding aspect of the job and shows that if you do a good job, work with integrity and build a reputation, your business can grow without much marketing,” said deMarco.

Although the company is still small, deMarco likes it that way for now because this gives him a chance to really focus on keeping focused staff that provides clients with top-notch service.

“If we were too big we would have to start hiring less qualified people and service would suffer,” he said. “It’s almost like family. Communication is easy and direct, and we always know what’s going on. We can also provide more intimacy, like entertaining clients at my home. They really appreciate how warm that gesture really is.”

Running a company has become easier over the six years since he first came to the city. People have developed more respect for good business practices, ethics and law. The city and Central Government and the free market have also been instrumental in promoting this change, deMarco said.

Dealing with Chinese people is relatively easy for deMarco because they seem very receptive to the way he does things, he said. “Actually it’s pretty much the same as anywhere. Treat people right and they will treat you right,” he said.

“But I do suggest expatriates learn some Chinese because a little goes a long way. Chinese are very tolerant of foreigners in that they understand we come from different cultures and customs and allow us leeway for that. It’s respectful,” said deMarco.
